Selective Breeding at Moonsbrook Alpacas

Improving the fibre value and productivity of our alpacas while consolidating colour genetics is top of high priority at Moonsbrook Alpacas. Each generation we produce must have a correct frame that grows a commercial fleece while keeping a good temperament and fertility. Each generation must also have a stronger and more uniform genetic background, which gives predictability and uniformity in future generations. This improvement can only occur when we choose the correct stud sire for each female on the farm.

The last 13 years alpaca breeding has given us a good understanding of how fibre and bone characteristics in our huacaya bloodstock are expressed in their progeny. These lessons can also be used on our suri stock. We also understand the importance of setting in place firm family lines while attempting to genetically fix certain fibre and bone characteristics in these lines. Through the mistakes and success that we have achieved we now have in place breeding strategies that are improving the fineness and yield of our suri fleeces while gaining fibre production predictability.

The herd sires at the centre of our breeding programme including Accoyo Bulleymand and Suri Wonder Dream are available to like minded breeders looking for proven top line sires. These sires and their sons are proving to produce most of the suri show winners found in the UK today. Acoyo Bulleymand and Suri Wonder Dream are the result of many years selective breeding at Accoyo and Rural Alianza EPS - in Peru with their main focus being to produce sires carrying highly productive fine fleeces and desirable frames.
